Thanks for your website and the beautiful picture,CNN is really comprehensive.
Seeker, how did you learn English before going abroad? Did you have language
barrier in the first few months? What's the best way to master English?
Latest news,an American was beheaded in Iraq.It gave America a lesson.
Until now I still have a lot of communication difficulties with Americans. Do you have the feeling that you totally can not make any sense during some Chinese speaking? I am not saying different dialects. I surely you do.
I think the barriers are not only language but everyday life. Just imagine, you do not have any experiences of buying a house, how can you have some responses when they are talking about it.
I had every good training in English before I came here (at least I thought it was). I was so confident as many other young Chinese that I won't have any problem of communication with Americans. However, soon I found out that my English was so bad that I could not even understand every simple word when they talked with me. I was afraid of talking with my Americans colleagues, answering the phone, or some other things. It took me more than a year to get over it.
During these several years I had a lot of chances of gving presentations in front of people in seminars and meetings. Gradually I become better and better.
I hope these do not dis-encourage you improving your English. I think one good way to study English is reading their new papers and watching their TV serials such as "Friends" or "Seinfeld". It will give you a lot of sense of how "normal" American talking. One more thing is that if possible do not use English-Chinese dictionary, use English dictionary. It will help you to understand word procisely.
God bless.
