The spires of Westminster Abbey cut dramatic shapes into a blushing twilight sky. The famous London church began as a Benedictine monastery enlarged by King Edward in the 1040s. It was designated the "west minster" to distinguish it from St. Pauls Cathedral, the "east minster." For centuries, Westminster Abbey has hosted royal coronations and burials.

The skeletal remains of a building in Hiroshima, Japan, stand as a reminder of the enduring injury from the U.S. atomic bomb attack there in 1945.
More than half of the citys buildings were destroyed by the bomb, which packed the equivalent of 15,000 tons (13,600 metric tons) of TNT. About 70,000 to 80,000 of Hiroshimas 350,000 residents were killed by the blast, and many suffered long-term illnesses from the radiation.

many indigenous peoples, including the Hisatsinom, or Anasazi. They and others

survived by growing cotton, corn, beans, and squash along the sandy banks and

terraces of the Colorado River some 1,300 years ago.

In a dramatic freefall, the 275-foot (84-meter) Montmorency Falls plunges into the

St. Lawrence River in Quebec, Canada. In winter, frozen spray from the falls

accumulates into an enormous icy mound known as the Sugarloaf, popular with sledders

and climbers.
